The UNESCO in Iraq held a workshop with the government authorities in the Kurdistan region, on the implications of protecting journalists and combating impunity in the context of the Breaking the Silence project funded by the Dutch Embassy in Iraq in its second phase.
The workshop discussed, in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Interior, the Peshmerga, the Ministry of Human Rights and the Journalists Syndicate in the Kurdistan region, the best mechanism to enhance freedom of expression and the safety of journalists,
The discussions focused on the optimal mechanisms to achieve the regional government's response to international reports on the indicators of freedom of expression and the safety of journalists, as well as combating impunity for perpetrators.
UNESCO in Iraq aspires to implement a program to join the regional government with the central government in terms of government authorities' response to international decisions on the safety of journalists and the promotion of freedom of expression.
