Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha has condemned in the strongest terms yesterday's burning of a copy of the Holy Quran by an extremist group in front of the Iraqi Embassy in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Taha said that repeated incidents that disrespect Muslim faith constitute incitement to religious hatred, intolerance and discrimination, and warned against their dangerous consequences.
He cited the provisions of the final communique of the OIC Executive Committee, issued at its extraordinary meeting held on July 2, 2023, which stipulate that such provocations are contrary to the spirit of Articles 19 and 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and could not be justified under the pretext of freedom of expression or opinion.
The secretary-general urged the Danish government to take the measures needed to prevent the recurrence of such provocative acts and avoid their repercussions.
