The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned Wednesday the coup attempt took place in Niger earlier in the day, calling for the immediate release of President Mohammad Bazoum.
In a statement, the community said it sorrowfully learnt about the coup attempt in Niger, adding that it called on those responsible for that move to release immediately the country's democratically elected president.
The community held those responsible for the coup attempt accountable for safety and security of Bazoum and his family as well as the government members and public security.
Niger's local media reported earlier Wednesday that President Bazoum was being detained by some members of the Presidential Guard, affirming that the army personnel do not back this move.
