Iran: We did not intervene in any attack against American forces in Iraq and Syria

Baghdad - The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Irani, considered in his letter to the Security Council that all allegations by the United States are “unfounded and categorically rejected,” indicating that his country “has never intervened in any action or attack against the US military forces in Syria and Iraq.

Irani wrote, in a letter to Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations and President of the Security Council, “This letter is a response to the letter of the Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council, in which he made unsubstantiated and baseless allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

He added, "All allegations in the letter are baseless and categorically rejected, and the Islamic Republic of Iran has never intervened in any action or attack against American military forces in Syria and Iraq."

He pointed out that “the United States’ attempt to invoke and rely on the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter to legitimize its illegal military actions by targeting civilians and vital infrastructure in Syria lacks a legal basis and credibility, and is an arbitrary and incorrect interpretation of Article 51 of the Charter.

He pointed out that "the clear purpose of such baseless allegations is to justify the continued violation of international law and the United Nations Charter by the United States inside Syria," adding that "according to international law, an occupying country has no right to invoke the right to self-defense as a reliable justification for illegal acts in territories under its occupation.”

Irani added, "the Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations has repeatedly expressed his strong opposition to the continued illegal presence of American military forces in Syria, describing it as a clear violation of international laws and a clear disregard for Syrian national and regional sovereignty, unity, and political independence. The Syrian Arab Republic has repeatedly requested, the United States calls on it to end its occupation and illegal presence in Syria."

Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations stressed, "The United States must stop its illegal actions, end its illegal occupation, and fulfill its international legal obligations, including relevant Security Council resolutions, which require all member states to support and respect the national sovereignty, independence, and integrity of Syria." "This is in the interest of regional and international peace and security."

Irani also said, “The presence of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Syria is completely legal, and comes in response to the official request from the Syrian government to fight terrorism, and Iran once again confirms its commitment to respecting national sovereignty, Syria’s territorial integrity, unity, and political independence.”
