The Jazan Region is home to many ancient historic castles, representing a rich historical heritage spanning centuries and a prominent feature of the region's civilization and tourism. These castles encapsulate the identity of the community, its values, and traditions, reflected in the architectural details of these buildings from past centuries through their stones, columns, pottery, inscriptions, and unique decorations. They are a tourist attraction for lovers of enchanting nature and rich human heritage. The historic castle in Abu Arish, built hundreds of years ago and located about 33 kilometers from Jizan city, is a notable example of rich historical heritage. It is one of the most important tourist sites in the region and an excellent attraction for visitors, tourists, and enthusiasts of history and ancient architecture. The castle is square, with each side measuring 40 meters. Circular towers at all corners support it, and there are openings for surveillance in the upper part of its outer wall. The f ortress, parts of which still stand tall today, was constructed using burnt bricks. Local building materials were used, and skilled labourers in the region utilized burnt bricks to construct the walls, openings, towers, and arches of the castle. This style was the most widespread in the old cities of that region.Stones were used to reinforce the circular towers, employed for guard duties and as a garrison site for the columns. This style was common in castles along the Red Sea coast. The roofs were constructed using the stems of the doum tree, which is abundant in the region, especially around the Jazan Valley in the south. The building featured minimal decoration due to its primary function, which leaned towards using architectural elements and decorations similar to those found in palaces and residential buildings.Source: Saudi Press Agency
