DUBAI: An exclusive whitepaper commissioned for the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) by Digital Tourism Think Tank (DTTT) has revealed a pressing need for enhanced efforts in the tourism sector to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to sustainability. The report highlights that a mere 15% of these goals are on track to be fulfilled by 2030, emphasizing the urgency for concerted action within the industry.According to Emirates News Agency, the whitepaper draws on United Nations research, projecting significant environmental impacts if current tourism practices continue unchecked. By 2050, tourism could potentially lead to a 154% rise in energy consumption, a 131% increase in greenhouse gas emissions, a 152% rise in water usage, and a staggering 251% increase in solid waste generation. This underscores the critical need for increased investment in sustainable development within the sector. Research from Visa and Oxford Economics also points out a prevalent lack of information an d transparency regarding sustainable travel options available to consumers.The report, titled "Exploring the Future of Tourism Technology," utilized insights from the ATM Innovation Wall during the 2024 edition of the show, encouraging industry professionals to propose innovative solutions to the challenges facing sustainable tourism. Ideas ranged from gamified recycling initiatives to hyper-personalized travel experiences focused on cultural immersion, illustrating the diverse approaches needed to tackle these issues.Participants in the discussion emphasized the necessity for systemic and collective action to transition tourism towards a circular and regenerative model. Suggested solutions include the use of innovative technologies for resource optimization, aligning business strategies with local community interests to ensure equitable economic benefits, and promoting transformative cultural immersion experiences.Nicholas Hall, Founder and CEO of Digital Tourism Think Tank, commented on the importance of diverse perspectives in achieving sustainable tourism. He noted that the path to a sustainable future requires a multifaceted approach, from managing plastic waste to fostering responsible travel behavior and ensuring that tourism benefits local communities.The GCC region has already embarked on several initiatives to integrate sustainability into tourism strategies. These include the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031, Saudi Vision 2030, Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030, Bahrain Tourism Strategy 2022-2026, Omani National Tourism Strategy, and Kuwait 2035 Vision.Sustainable tourism will remain a focal point during the ATM 2025 edition, under the theme "Global Travel: Developing Tomorrow's Tourism Through Enhanced Connectivity." The event will host sessions designed to share sustainable practices and ethical methods driving the sustainable tourism agenda.Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME of Arabian Travel Market, highlighted ATM's role in promoting sustainability in tourism. She stated that by providing a platform for collaboration, ATM encourages the development of region-specific sustainability frameworks integrating environmental, social, and economic dimensions.
