UAE Council for Fatwa Hosts ‘Al Shawwaf Forum’ on Crescent Sighting at Saadiyat Island

Abu Dhabi: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Council for Fatwa is organizing the 'Al Shawwaf Forum' on February 17 at Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. The event aims to gather experts, key figures, and national institutions, alongside international bodies specializing in Sharia, astronomy, and legal affairs, to engage in discussions and activities related to crescent sighting.

According to Emirates News Agency, Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, Chairman of the UAE Council for Fatwa, expressed gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his support. He noted that this patronage reflects a commitment to initiatives that bolster national institutions in fulfilling their roles. The forum aligns with the council's efforts to enhance scientific research and develop policies regarding crescent sighting, while also strengthening partnerships with relevant entities at both local and regional levels.

The forum's goal is to improve coordination with relevant authorities to unify national perspectives on crescent observation and verification, adhering to global best practices. It aims to achieve Sharia and scientific accuracy for the Holy Month of Ramadan 1446 AH - 2025 AD. The initiative also seeks to establish advanced Sharia and scientific solutions for crescent sighting and governance, reinforcing the UAE's leadership in astronomical observation and the lunar calendar system.

In addition to discussions, the forum will feature an exhibition showcasing the UAE's cultural heritage and traditions related to crescent sighting. The name 'Al Shawwaf' is derived from an Emirati term denoting individuals with exceptional eyesight, traditionally used to describe those who observed and tracked the crescent moon to mark the beginning of the lunar month.

The 'Al Shawwaf Forum' represents a significant step in combining scientific and cultural efforts to enhance the accuracy and reliability of crescent sighting practices in the UAE and beyond.
