Abu Dhabi: The aviation technology firm LODD and investment holding group 7X have successfully launched the first pilot flight for autonomous drone parcel deliveries in Abu Dhabi. This initiative marks a significant advancement in the emirate's logistics sector, showcasing the potential for innovation in trade, transport, and logistics through the use of cutting-edge technology.
According to Emirates News Agency, the trial is part of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council's strategy, supported by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), to adopt integrated mobility solutions throughout the emirate. The initiative received oversight from the General Civil Aviation Authority and the Integrated Transport Centre, aligning with ADIO's Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry cluster. This effort is aimed at localizing production, developing future-ready infrastructure, and enhancing Abu Dhabi's status as a global hub for innovation and advanced industries.
Omran Malek, Head of the SAVI Cluster at ADIO, expressed pride in supporting the development of logistics technologies that bolster Abu Dhabi's global innovation stature. He highlighted the pilot as an example of local partnerships and forward-thinking strategies contributing to the emirate's economic and infrastructure value.
The trial, conducted in Khalifa City, showcased the feasibility of autonomous aerial parcel delivery. Utilizing a secure winch-based delivery system, a drone transported a simulated package from a local post office to a designated drop zone.
Humaid Saber Al Hameli, Director of the Aviation Transport Division at the Integrated Transport Centre, emphasized the importance of airspace safety and security. He noted the ongoing development of regulatory frameworks to facilitate the integration of unmanned aerial systems into Abu Dhabi's transport ecosystem. Al Hameli described the pilot as a testament to public-private sector collaboration and a step towards the future of smart aerial mobility in the emirate.
Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD, highlighted the transformative potential of autonomous drones in urban delivery networks, allowing for scalable and responsive logistics operations. Tariq Al Wahedi, Group CEO of 7X, underscored the milestone as a demonstration of their commitment to next-generation logistics solutions that align with the UAE's vision for smart mobility.
