Abu dhabi: Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club organised the Arilah 60ft Dhow Sailing Race. The event witnessed ‘Al-Tebr 55’, owned by Rashid Mohammed bin Ghadir and captained by Mohammed Suhail Khalfan Al-Muhairi, securing the first place.
According to Emirates News Agency, the heritage event is part of the season’s traditional racing programme, highlighting the significance of preserving the UAE’s national heritage and maintaining an interest in traditional maritime sports. The race attracted over 90 traditional sailing dhows, challenging participants over a 25 nautical mile course, and providing a platform for dhow owners, captains, and elite sailors to exhibit their seamanship.
The organising committee allocated a total prize pool of AED4.2million for the winners, further incentivizing participation. The race plays a crucial role in preserving the UAE’s maritime heritage, promoting traditional sailing
skills, and ensuring that this knowledge is passed on to future generations through active participation and community engagement.
