Trump Escalates Trade Tensions with Canada by Imposing Additional Tariffs

Washington: US President Donald Trump announced an increase in tariffs on Canadian goods by an additional 10 percent, citing a contentious advertisement campaign from Ontario as the catalyst for the decision. The ad, which featured clips of former US President Ronald Reagan criticizing high tariffs, has become a focal point of cross-border trade tensions.

According to Union of OIC News Agencies, the announcement of increased tariffs follows Trump's decision to halt all trade discussions with Canada, a move prompted by what he termed a fraudulent ad campaign. The ad, which aired during a prominent sports event, the World Series, was deemed misleading by the Ronald Reagan foundation, which is currently exploring legal options against the Ontario government.

The ongoing dispute is further heightened by the presence of a Canadian team, the Toronto Blue Jays, in the World Series, competing against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Meanwhile, Ontario has agreed to withdraw the controversial ad by Monday, aiming to resume negotiations. However, the ad is scheduled to air again during the next baseball game.

The tariffs imposed by Trump, especially on sectors like steel, aluminum, and automotive, have significantly affected Canada, leading to job losses and economic strain. Despite these challenges, the United States and Canada continue to follow the USMCA agreement, which maintains tariff-free trade on a majority of goods.

In response to the situation, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for a strategic economic shift, acknowledging the heightened tariff levels reminiscent of the Great Depression era. Both leaders are expected to attend an APEC dinner in South Korea, though Trump has indicated no intention to meet with Carney.
