UAE and African Union Commission Solidify Partnership with Strategic Meeting in Addis Ababa

Addis ababa: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the African Union Commission (AUC) convened a high-level meeting in Addis Ababa, marking a significant step in advancing their collaborative efforts. The meeting, held on 6th January 2026 between Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AUC, and Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State, aimed at reinforcing the shared commitment to enhance the UAE-AU partnership.

According to Emirates News Agency, this meeting followed the initial political consultations in Abu Dhabi on 13th September 2025, grounded in the 2019 Memorandum of Understanding. Both parties assessed the progress since their inaugural discussions, exchanged insights on priority cooperation areas, and pledged to maintain a robust political dialogue.

The dialogue centered on Agenda 2063, particularly the 'Silencing the Guns by 2030' initiative, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Both sides acknowledged the vital link between peace, security, trade, and development, agreeing to bolster collaboration to support these strategic goals. They recognized that enduring peace is essential for economic integration, while increased trade and investment promote stability and sustainable growth in Africa.

The UAE's launch of the US$1 billion 'AI for Development' initiative, announced at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, was welcomed by both parties. They highlighted its potential to aid Africa's development goals through innovation and digital transformation.

Discussions also covered peace and security concerns in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the connection between regional stability and security in the Arabian Gulf. On Sudan, both sides stressed the urgency of an unconditional humanitarian truce, a permanent ceasefire, and the establishment of an independent civilian-led government, aligning with the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

They recalled previous joint statements and efforts, including the High-Level Humanitarian Conference in February 2025, and condemned atrocities against civilians. Support for Sudan's territorial integrity and unity and a peaceful resolution were reaffirmed.

On Somalia, both parties reiterated their support for its sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, and stability. The continued occupation of the UAE's three islands by Iran was condemned, with both sides advocating for a peaceful resolution through international law.

The upcoming 2026 United Nations Water Conference, co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, was highlighted as an opportunity to promote water resilience. Both sides agreed to collaborate for impactful outcomes in Africa, emphasizing initiatives like the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative.

In conclusion, the UAE and AUC reaffirmed their dedication to deepening their cooperation across shared priorities to foster peace, stability, and sustainable development.
