Abu dhabi: Jos© Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, has emphasized his country's excellent relations with all nations and declared that Timor-Leste has no enemies.
According to Emirates News Agency, during a conversation at the World Governments Summit 2026, President Ramos-Horta stated, "We have the best possible relationship with China, and an excellent relationship with Indonesia. We are members of ASEAN, enjoy strong ties with Japan and South Korea, maintain excellent relations with the United States and the European Union-and we have no enemies."
Ramos-Horta praised the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its mediating role in various conflicts, such as the dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia, and for hosting peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. He also commended the UAE's humanitarian efforts, noting its significant contributions to global emergency aid relative to its GDP.
Reflecting on Timor-Leste's journey to independence from Indonesia in 2002, President Ramos-Horta recalled the pivotal role of the United Nations Secretary-General in negotiating a popular referendum. He highlighted Indonesia's respect for the referendum's outcome, which resulted in an 80% vote in favor of independence. Instead of destabilizing the nascent state, Indonesia extended a hand of friendship and reconciliation, becoming a key partner in Timor-Leste's stability and ASEAN accession.
The World Governments Summit 2026, themed 'Shaping the Governments of the Future,' concludes today. It has gathered more than 60 heads of state and government, over 500 ministers, representatives from more than 150 governments, over 80 international and regional organizations, 700 CEOs, and more than 6,250 participants globally.
