OHCHR Launches $400 Million Appeal to Address Global Human Rights Needs

Geneva: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Trk has initiated a $400 million funding appeal for 2026, aiming to tackle global human rights challenges amidst increasing global crises. Trk emphasized to States that the human rights system must not fall into crisis, highlighting the critical nature of their ongoing work.

According to Emirates News Agency, Trk underscored the necessity of addressing inequalities and respecting economic and social rights to ensure peace and stability. He remarked that human rights initiatives are essential for creating economies that benefit everyone and prevent exclusion and instability. Trk also pointed out that the liquidity crisis affecting the regular budget has had a significant impact on the broader human rights ecosystem.

For 2026, the UN General Assembly has sanctioned a regular budget of $224.3 million, sourced from assessed contributions by Member States. This budget represents a 10 percent reduction from the previous year, 2025, with lingering uncertainties about the actual funds the Office will receive due to the UN's liquidity issues. In light of these challenges, the Office is seeking an additional $400 million through voluntary contributions in its 2026 Appeal.

Trk highlighted that historically, human rights have constituted a very small fraction of overall UN spending. He called for increased support for their cost-effective, impactful work that stabilizes communities, fosters trust in institutions, and supports enduring peace. He further stressed the importance of receiving more unearmarked and timely contributions to enable swift responses, as human rights initiatives cannot afford delays.
