Global Energy Efficiency Alliance Commences Operations at World Government Summit

Dubai: The Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA) held its inaugural meeting at the World Government Summit (WGS) 2026. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and President of GEEA, led the session, which gathered ministers from member states alongside representatives from international organizations, the private sector, and financing institutions. This marked a strategic advancement in international collaboration on energy efficiency.

According to Emirates News Agency, the meeting unveiled GEEA's Charter, committing member states to targets such as doubling the global rate of energy efficiency improvement to over 4 percent annually by 2030. This initiative aligns with global climate goals by accelerating emissions reductions and enhancing resource efficiency, establishing energy efficiency as a critical pathway for achieving climate and economic benefits in this decade.

The agenda also included discussions on the Alliance's strategy and statute, emphasizing the need for integrated work plans to transition from commitments to practical implementation. Participants deliberated on policy alignment between national and international efforts, governance mechanisms, impact measurement, and the exchange of data and expertise.

A significant highlight was the launch of GEEA's digital platform, GEEA.AE, an interactive hub designed for sharing expertise on energy efficiency policies, government projects, and investment opportunities among member states. The platform, powered by artificial intelligence, connects governments, the private sector, technology providers, the banking and financial sectors, and academia.

Al Mazrouei highlighted the global energy system's inefficiencies, costing over US$2 trillion annually due to wasted energy across buildings, industry, and transport. He stressed the importance of GEEA in closing the implementation gap, as current global energy efficiency improvement rates fall below 2 percent annually, far short of the 4 percent needed to meet climate goals and achieve net-zero emissions.

He also pointed out the equity and development implications of energy efficiency, noting that 675 million people lack access to electricity globally, with billions more dependent on inefficient energy systems. Al Mazrouei emphasized that the commitment made at COP28 to double the rate of energy efficiency improvement by 2030 is pivotal for restoring energy efficiency as a practical climate solution.

The UAE's commitment to energy efficiency is evident in its national policies, yielding emissions reductions, energy savings, and economic returns. The GEEA initiative represents a strategic effort to unify international action in this field.

Eng Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Vice President of GEEA, noted that GEEA is the first international platform uniting governments, private sectors, international organizations, financial institutions, and research centers. It provides a framework for sharing successful experiences and developing unified benchmarking tools to reduce energy waste.

Al Olama extended an open invitation for global participation, aiming to create an accessible, efficient, equitable, and sustainable energy future, reinforcing the UAE's role as a trusted global partner in shaping the energy sector's future.

The GEEA was launched at a high-level roundtable during the World Governments Summit 2025, where its overarching framework was discussed with representatives from several countries and sectors. The UAE officially assumed the presidency of the Alliance during the 10th Global Conference on Energy Efficiency in Brussels, Belgium, for the next three years.
