Abu dhabi: The UAE will commemorate Zayed Humanitarian Day tomorrow, observed annually on the 19th of Ramadan, coinciding with the anniversary of the passing of the nation's Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Zayed Humanitarian Day underscores the UAE's dedication to the legacy of Sheikh Zayed, who is recognized globally for his contributions to humanitarian efforts.
According to Emirates News Agency, Sheikh Zayed was instrumental in establishing the UAE as a prominent donor nation, committed to providing humanitarian and relief aid worldwide. In 1971, he founded the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, reinforcing the UAE's dedication to global assistance. Additionally, in 1992, he launched the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, known today as Zayed for Good Foundation, which continues its humanitarian mission both domestically and internationally.
From 1971 to 2004, the UAE contributed approximately AED90.5 billion in aid to various countries, reflecting Sheikh Zayed's widespread impact in humanitarian fields. His efforts earned him numerous accolades, including the Golden Document from the International Organisation of Foreigners in 1985 and the Arab League's Ribbon of Development and Environment Award in 1993.
The UAE continues to uphold Sheikh Zayed's humanitarian legacy through diverse initiatives. During Ramadan, the nation has implemented several major humanitarian campaigns, like the 11.5 campaign aimed at alleviating child hunger and Emirates Red Crescent's Ramadan programmes, benefiting 1.5 million people in 44 countries.
Furthermore, the UAE has shown ongoing support for the Palestinian people in Gaza, recently pledging an additional US$1.2 billion through the Peace Council. The UAE has been the largest donor to Gaza's population from 2024 to 2026, contributing over US$4.2 billion, which accounts for about 50 percent of total international aid.
In addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, the UAE has pledged US$500 million to support civilians affected by the civil war. This is part of the UAE's continued commitment to Sudan, with assistance exceeding US$4.24 billion over the past decade, including US$800 million since 2023.
