EU: Asylum Decisions Down by 18% in 2025

Brussels: The EU countries granted protection status to 361,325 asylum seekers in 2025, marking an 18% decrease compared with 2024, when 437,735 asylum seekers were granted protection.

According to Emirates News Agency, figures published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, revealed that of those granted protection, 51% received refugee status, 25% were given humanitarian status, and 24% were awarded subsidiary protection. Compared with 2024, the number of those receiving refugee status dropped by 0.5%, subsidiary protection saw a significant decrease of 50%, while humanitarian status recipients increased by 11%.

Germany reported the highest number of people granted protection status, with 103,360 individuals, accounting for 29% of the EU total. Spain followed with 76,210 recipients (21%), and France with 72,930 (20%). Collectively, these three countries granted protection status to 70% of all asylum seekers at the EU level.
