Zurich: The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is committed to using football to drive positive change beyond the pitch. Across Europe and beyond, UEFA initiatives are utilizing football to promote inclusion, well-being, and opportunity, aligning with the broader objectives of World Football Day, launched by the United Nations in 2024, as stated in UEFA's message marking the occasion.
According to Emirates News Agency, UEFA highlighted its role as a founding member of the UN's Football for the Goals initiative, emphasizing its ongoing support for the game's contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. UEFA continues to implement measures across various tournaments, from EURO final tournaments to youth competitions, aimed at creating inclusive, accessible, and environmentally responsible events for players, supporters, and local communities.
Beyond the football pitch, UEFA's Take Care programme is assisting young people in adopting healthier habits across six areas of daily life. The programme offers a wealth of freely available resources on physical activity, nutrition, mental health, digital addiction, substance awareness, and road safety.
World Football Day is celebrated annually on 25 May, commemorating the first-ever international football tournament at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. This event laid the foundation for a global phenomenon that transcends borders and unites cultures. In 2024, marking the tournament's 100th anniversary, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution establishing World Football Day to celebrate football's ongoing support for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
