Abu dhabi: Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has pledged an emergency humanitarian response amounting to US$30 million to assist civilians affected by the worsening situation in El Obeid, North Kordofan, Sudan. The initiative, aimed at addressing the urgent needs in the region, underscores the UAE's commitment to supporting the Sudanese populace during these challenging times.
According to Emirates News Agency, the financial aid will be channeled through the UAE Aid Agency, reflecting the UAE's dedication to humanitarian efforts. The escalating humanitarian crisis in El Obeid and its surrounding areas has left civilians and displaced individuals in dire need of food security, healthcare, safe drinking water, and shelter. The UAE emphasized the necessity for an immediate and coordinated humanitarian response to ensure that essential aid reaches those most in need, particularly the vulnerable groups.
The UAE further reiterated the urgency of protecting civilians in El Obeid and across Sudan, urging the international community to prioritize this issue. The UAE called upon all parties involved in the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law, avoid escalation in densely populated areas, and facilitate the swift and safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State and Member of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, stated that this urgent response is a testament to the UAE leadership's steadfast belief in prioritizing human welfare. At this crucial juncture, the focus should be on civilian protection, enabling safe humanitarian corridors, and addressing the immediate needs of displaced individuals and vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and women.
He further highlighted the UAE's ongoing support for the Sudanese people and collaboration with international partners to alleviate civilian suffering and bolster the humanitarian response. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the plight of civilians is not politicized and that international efforts remain centered on saving lives and upholding accountability for violations through unbiased mechanisms.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, mentioned that the humanitarian assistance is part of the UAE's commitment to supporting global humanitarian response plans in collaboration with the United Nations and its affiliates. This effort aims to provide food, healthcare, shelter, and support to refugees, displaced persons, and the most vulnerable communities within Sudan and neighboring countries.
The UAE reiterated that there is no military solution to the Sudan crisis, stressing that the focus should be on civilian protection, facilitating humanitarian access, de-escalating tensions, and supporting a civilian-led political process in Sudan. This approach aims to achieve lasting peace, maintain Sudan's unity and stability, and fulfill the aspirations of the Sudanese people for security, prosperity, and a dignified life.
