UAE Ranks First Among Arab Nations in 2026 Environmental Performance Index

Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates has achieved the highest ranking among Arab countries in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), highlighting the nation's successful approach to climate action, ecosystem vitality, and environmental health.

According to Emirates News Agency, the 2026 EPI assesses nations using 47 performance indicators organized into 12 categories, focusing on Environmental Health, Ecosystem Vitality, and Climate Change. The UAE's ascent in the rankings is credited to its balanced efforts across these pillars, with significant investments in environmental infrastructure and regulatory frameworks.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized the UAE's long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, which has been integrated into government policies and societal values. The UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy has accelerated decarbonization and positioned the country as a leader in global energy transition, supported by national policies and strategic investments.

The UAE achieved a perfect score in waste management and bottom trawling fisheries, indicating effective management and protection of marine life. It also ranks highly in wastewater treatment and the protection of marine Key Biodiversity Areas, showcasing its dedication to preserving natural marine environments.

Guided by the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, the nation aims to significantly increase renewable energy contributions and investments to meet growing energy demands. Notable projects such as Noor Abu Dhabi and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park have led to a 117% growth in renewable energy capacity between 2022 and 2025.

Additionally, the UAE is advancing hydrogen technologies and investing in water management and desalination technologies to ensure water security. The National Air Quality Agenda 2031 and Circular Economy Policy 2031 further solidify the UAE's commitment to environmental health and sustainable development.

Biodiversity efforts include the goal of planting 100 million mangrove trees by 2030, with over 50 million already planted. The UAE leverages artificial intelligence and technology to enhance environmental conservation and afforestation efforts.

The UAE's strategic governance, clean energy initiatives, and technological innovations have established it as a global sustainability leader, offering a model for environmental performance both regionally and globally.
