Emirates Polar Program Engages in Arctic Circle Assembly 2026

Reykjavík:The Emirates Polar Program, recognized as the first Arab national polar initiative, actively participated in the Arctic Circle Assembly 2026, held in Reykjavík, Iceland from October 8 to 10. The program contributed to global efforts aimed at advancing cryospheric science, emphasizing the impact that changes in glaciers, ice sheets, and snow have on water systems, livelihoods, and communities far beyond the polar regions.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Emirates Polar Program engaged in the Assembly through a partnership with Arctic Circle, joining approximately 2,300 participants from 70 countries. The event featured 700 speakers across more than 200 sessions. Dr. Aisha Al Suwaidi, Chief Science Advisor to the Emirates Polar Program, moderated a session titled 'Ice, Water Systems, and Livelihoods,' focusing on the links between cryosphere changes, water security, and livelihoods, and the importance of integrating science, policy, and community responses to global impacts.

Wassim Said, a member of the Emirates Polar Program Steering Committee, contributed as a panelist in another session, 'Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences 2025-2034.' This session, organized by UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme and the Icelandic Meteorological Office, explored how enhanced research, observation, and international coordination can transform scientific insights into informed policies and collective action.

The Emirates Polar Program's involvement in the Assembly builds on the UAE's accession to the Svalbard Treaty in April 2026, which has expanded the nation's role in Arctic science and international collaboration. This treaty provides UAE researchers opportunities for fieldwork and collaboration with the global research community in Svalbard, including at Ny-Ålesund.

As a non-Arctic nation, the UAE offers a unique perspective on polar discussions. Changes in the cryosphere affect countries globally by impacting sea levels, water availability, and climate systems. The program's participation underscores the UAE's commitment to international polar science collaboration and addressing transnational challenges. This engagement aligns with the efforts of the International Affairs Office at the UAE Presidential Court to enhance international cooperation in science and research.
