New York:The United Arab Emirates has reiterated its dedication to enhancing international collaboration for the peaceful and sustainable use of outer space. This commitment was emphasized by Ibrahim Al Qassim, Deputy Director General of the UAE Space Agency, during a session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The UAE highlighted its pivotal role in advancing global efforts to ensure the safety and sustainability of space activities.
According to Wam, Al Qassim emphasized the UAE's leadership in establishing and chairing the Expert Group on Space Situational Awareness under the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). This group, active from 2025 to 2028, aims to improve international coordination and address the rising threats posed by space debris and the congested nature of Earth's orbits.
Al Qassim stressed that international cooperation is vital for maintaining a secure and sustainable orbital environment, especially as space activities expand and more countries and companies participate. He underscored the UAE's strategic priority of fostering such cooperation to support its national space sector and contribute to the global space economy.
The Expert Group's initiatives involve contributions from 96 experts across 40 countries, with input from 18 UN Member States. They are working on recommendations to establish communication channels for satellite operators and enhance the exchange of orbital data to mitigate collision risks.
The UAE also reaffirmed its adherence to international space treaties and its efforts in developing national legislation to support safe space activities while boosting private-sector involvement. Progress under the National Space Strategy 2031 was reviewed, including investment in scientific exploration and a knowledge-based space economy.
Significant projects include the development of the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt's lander, set to launch in 2028, and preparations for the Rashid 2 mission to the Moon's far side. The Emirates Mars Mission's Hope Probe extension until 2028 was also highlighted, along with private-sector achievements like the launch of Altair-1 by Orbitworks.
Lastly, Al Qassim mentioned the UAE's presidency of the International Charter Space and Major Disasters, where it provided satellite imagery for disaster response. The UAE concluded by stressing the necessity of global cooperation to protect the space environment for future generations.
