Sharjah: China's Xinjiang is fast becoming a pivotal player in the nation's clean energy sector, leveraging its abundant solar and wind resources to foster economic growth and environmental sustainability. This transformation aligns closely with China's ambitious dual carbon goals.
According to Emirates News Agency, China has set a target to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Xinjiang's wealth of solar and wind resources establishes it as a critical clean energy hub and a vital transmission corridor within these environmental strategies.
In 2024, the region witnessed a significant increase in new energy generation, surging by 30.7 percent to reach 116.16 billion kilowatt-hours. This growth accounted for over 80 percent of Xinjiang's total power increase, as reported by State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power. Photovoltaic power generation saw a substantial rise of 65.7 percent year on year, reaching 40.77 billion kWh. Meanwhile, wind power generation climbed to 75.39 billion kWh, marking a 17.3 percent increase from the previous year.
A notable solar project in Xinjiang's Wushi County, located in the heart of the Taklamakan Desert and benefiting from approximately 314 sunny days annually, spans 493 hectares. This project is capable of meeting the energy needs of about 430,000 people for a year, while also contributing to environmental protection and job creation.
