EAD Launches Groundwater Well Preservation Campaign in Abu Dhabi Emirate

Abu dhabi: The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has initiated a campaign to monitor and preserve groundwater wells in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. This effort aims to raise awareness and safeguard these vital resources from depletion and pollution, ensuring their sustainability for future generations.

According to Emirates News Agency, the campaign is part of the implementation of Local Law No. (5) of 2016, which regulates groundwater in Abu Dhabi Emirate. It is designed to enhance the emirate’s role in addressing climate change challenges and improve water security through effective management of natural resources.

The initiative targets the prevention of illegal extraction and commercial trading of groundwater on farms, practices that contribute to water degradation, lower groundwater levels, and increased soil salinity. These issues ultimately impact the sustainability of ecosystems and natural resources. The campaign also aims to raise public awareness about conserving this crucial resource, which is vital for agricultural productivity and economic development.

The campaign’s efforts support environmental protection, ensuring the continued availability of fresh water while enhancing both the quality and quantity of groundwater reserves across the emirate.

Starting from the Al Dhafra region, the campaign covers all farm wells in the Abu Dhabi Emirate, with the first phase beginning in Zayed City and continuing until December 30, 2025. Future phases will be planned based on the outcomes of this initial phase.

The Agency is working in collaboration with the Al Dhafra Region Municipality as part of an integrated plan. This includes direct engagement with farm owners through meetings, text messages, email, and EAD’s social media platforms. Additionally, Friday prayer sermons are being used to raise environmental awareness about the importance of conserving groundwater as a strategic national resource.

The Agency has emphasized that preserving natural resources is a shared national and societal responsibility, urging everyone to cooperate in making the campaign a success. This collective effort is aimed at protecting groundwater from depletion and pollution, ensuring a healthy environment, and securing a sustainable water future for current and future generations.
