Emirates Global Aluminium Evaluates Damage After Iranian Strikes on Al Taweelah Site

Abu dhabi: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has provided an initial assessment of the damage sustained by its Al Taweelah site following recent Iranian missile and drone attacks. The site, one of the largest aluminium production complexes globally, was evacuated, and facilities were shut down in response to the attacks at Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Al Taweelah site experienced significant damage affecting its smelter, Casthouse, power plant, alumina refinery, and recycling plant. EGA will need to restore infrastructure and resume operations progressively, with full restoration of primary aluminium production potentially taking up to 12 months. Some production at the alumina refinery and recycling plant might restart sooner, depending on damage assessments.

EGA's CEO, Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, expressed concern about the attacks, emphasizing the multinational workforce affected and the global economic implications. He assured that no one suffered life-threatening injuries and that those injured are recovering. Bin Kalban also highlighted the site's importance to global supply chains and committed to supporting impacted customers.

The Al Taweelah smelter produced 1.6 million tonnes of cast metal in 2025, while the alumina refinery produced 2.4 million tonnes, covering 46% of EGA's alumina needs. The recycling plant has an annual capacity of 185,000 tonnes. EGA maintains substantial metal stock both domestically and internationally to mitigate supply disruptions.
