Emirates Litfest 2026 Opens with 200 Speakers from Over 40 Countries

Dubai: The 18th edition of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature commenced today at the InterContinental Dubai Festival City, marking the start of a prominent cultural gathering in the region. This year's event promises an enriching experience, featuring 200 speakers from more than 40 countries, making it a key event on the global literary calendar.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Festival, running from January 21-27, 2026, presents a packed program of sessions, workshops, and experiences that bring together readers and writers. Distinguished authors including Wole Soyinka, Hoda Barakat, Jung Chang, and others are set to engage audiences through over 200 events, ranging from storytelling sessions to hands-on workshops.

The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures such as Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi and Zaki Nusseibeh, Cultural Adviser to the UAE President. The event featured musical performances and speeches, setting a reflective tone before the week's activities unfold. The ceremony included performances by The National Youth Strings Camerata and the Repton School Choir, receiving standing ovations from attendees.

Ahlam Bolooki, CEO of the Emirates Literature Foundation, emphasized the Festival's broader mission beyond books, highlighting its role in fostering hope and human connection. Boutros Boutros from Emirates expressed pride in supporting the Festival, underscoring its significance as a cultural event in Dubai.

Dubai Culture plays a crucial role in the Festival, supporting strands like 'Bil Emirati' and 'Translation' and backing the Literary Luminary Prize. This year's Festival also celebrates the legacy of Sultan bin Ali Al Owais, with representatives receiving a prize in his honor during the opening ceremony.

The Festival continues to highlight Emirati creativity, with participation from prominent Emirati authors and poets. Hala Badri, Director-General of Dubai Culture, highlighted the Festival's importance in showcasing Dubai's cultural vibrancy and fostering dialogue among global literary voices.

Throughout the week, festival-goers can partake in various activities tailored to diverse interests, including cultural commentary, storytelling, and creative craft sessions. The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature promises a unique, multi-sensory celebration of storytelling, inviting visitors to explore new perspectives and discover the joy of reading.
