Emirates Red Crescent Unveils Health Facilities on Anjouan Island in Comoros


Moroni: Under the directives of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the ‘Mother of the Nation’, and the follow-up of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, several health projects have been inaugurated in the Union of the Comoros by the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC). These projects, initiated under the Sheikha Fatima Fund, include the Sheikha Fatima ‘Mother of the Nation’ Maternity and Childhood Hospital and the Sheikha Fatima ‘Mother of the Nation’ Kidney Dialysis Centre on Anjouan Island.



According to Emirates News Agency, the inauguration ceremonies were attended by notable figures including President Azali Assoumani of the Union of the Comoros, Dr. Maitha Salem Al Shamsi, Minister of State, Juma Rashid Al Rumaithi, UAE Ambassador to the Comoros, and Ahmed Sari Al Mazrouei, Secretary-General of the ERC, alongside officials from both nations.



The Maternity and Childhood Hospital offers a 20-bed capacity and serves approximately 10,000 individuals annually. Key facilities include wards, intensive care units, natural childbirth and surgical operation rooms, anesthesia and sterilisation units, neonatal intensive care units, administrative offices, and rest areas for medical staff.



The Kidney Dialysis Centre is the first of its kind on Anjouan Island, equipped with eight advanced dialysis units and a specialised water treatment unit to ensure service quality and safety. The centre delivers around 5,000 dialysis sessions annually, offering comprehensive patient and family support, continuous medical follow-up, and regular clinical assessments.



In his speech, President Azali Assoumani expressed gratitude to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his support and described the UAE as a key partner in Comoros’ development. He noted the tangible impact of the UAE’s projects and initiatives on the country’s sustainable development goals and quality of life enhancements.



Dr. Maitha Al Shamsi highlighted the initiative as a reflection of Sheikha Fatima’s commitment to the developmental and humanitarian needs of the Comorian people. She emphasized the UAE’s strategy of sustainable giving through development programmes and projects that strengthen infrastructure and essential services.



Comorian officials and residents expressed appreciation for the UAE’s support and the Emirates Red Crescent’s efforts in alleviating local challenges. They acknowledged the UAE’s ongoing commitment to improving conditions and enhancing capabilities in the Comoros.
