EMSTEEL Achieves 45% Lower Carbon Intensity in Steel Production

Abu dhabi: EMSTEEL Group's Chief Executive Officer, Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, has announced significant progress in the company's efforts to transition towards a low-carbon industry. The announcement comes as part of the group's participation in Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026, marking their largest involvement in the event to date.

According to Emirates News Agency, Al Remeithi highlighted EMSTEEL's achievements, including a carbon intensity of 0.67 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne of steel, which is approximately 45 percent below the global average. The group's operations are powered by clean electricity for 86 percent of its processes, with a goal of reaching 100 percent by 2030. Furthermore, EMSTEEL captures around 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually in collaboration with ADNOC.

The company is following a decarbonisation roadmap aiming for a 40 percent reduction in steel emissions and a 30 percent reduction in cement emissions by 2030, with a long-term goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. EMSTEEL has already recorded a 30 percent reduction in emissions compared to its 2019 baseline.

Al Remeithi elaborated on the company's strategic pillars, which include the integration of clean electricity, carbon capture and storage, readiness for hydrogen use, operational efficiency, and the circular economy within an integrated industrial system. As part of these efforts, EMSTEEL has signed agreements with Modon Properties and Mered Developments to use sustainable steel solutions in major projects.

The company is also pioneering the region's first green hydrogen facility for sustainable steel production in partnership with Masdar and has implemented circular economy principles by reusing steel by-products in cement manufacturing. The TrueGreen programme offers accurate carbon data and environmental declarations in line with European and international standards.

Looking ahead to 2026, Al Remeithi expects the Middle East and North Africa region to remain resilient in the face of global supply, demand, and pricing fluctuations. He emphasized that the UAE's clean energy initiatives bolster EMSTEEL's capability to produce low-carbon steel, positioning the company to meet European market demands compliant with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.

Al Remeithi concluded by stating that EMSTEEL's competitive advantage lies in offering products with advanced specifications, lower emissions, and reliable carbon data, supported by the TrueGreen framework. This framework enhances compliance, allowing for transparent purchasing decisions.
