Europe Faces Lowest Gas Storage Levels Since 2013 Amid Winter Supply Concerns

Brussels:Europe is entering the 2026-27 winter heating season with its lowest natural gas storage levels in over a decade, raising concerns about supply security and global market stability.

According to Wam, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has reported that European Union gas storage sites are beginning the heating season with inventories at their lowest levels since 2013. This situation could increase the region's reliance on global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to meet winter demand.

The IEA has warned that reduced storage buffers may leave Europe more vulnerable to supply shortages, especially if the weather is colder than expected or if there are further disruptions to gas flows. Low inventories could also maintain strong European demand through the summer of 2027 as countries work to replenish storage ahead of the following winter, which would extend pressure on global gas markets.

The IEA's projections indicate that global LNG supply will fall by 3% in 2026, while global gas demand is expected to decline by approximately 1.5%. This decline is partly due to lower industrial gas consumption in Europe and a shift from gas to coal in the power sector across several Asian countries.

The report also highlighted that growing LNG supply from North America and more flexible international trading arrangements have helped offset some of the supply losses caused by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the halt of LNG flows through the strait between March and October resulted in Asian and European gas prices reaching their highest levels since the 2022-23 energy crisis, highlighting the market's vulnerability to geopolitical tensions and supply route disruptions.

The IEA emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation on gas supply security and more flexible trading and storage arrangements to withstand potential shocks and limit price volatility. Europe consequently faces the dual challenge of securing sufficient gas for winter demand while rebuilding reserves during the warmer months amid ongoing global supply pressures and geopolitical risks.
