European Parliament Rejects Motion of Censure Against European Commission

Brussels: In a vote on Thursday, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) rejected a motion of censure against the European Commission. The motion, which was tabled by the Patriots for Europe group, faced significant opposition with 165 votes in favor and 390 against, while 10 members abstained from voting.

According to Emirates News Agency, the motion followed a plenary debate with Commissioner Maroš Šefcovic on Monday, January 19. The Patriots for Europe group initiated this motion of no confidence in response to the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which had been approved by Member States on January 9 and subsequently signed on January 17 in Paraguay.

Under Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, a motion of censure against the Commission must be submitted to the President by at least one-tenth of the component members of Parliament, currently equating to 72 MEPs. The motion requires a roll call vote and must achieve a two-thirds majority of the votes cast, representing a majority of the component members of Parli
ament, to be successfully adopted.
