Experts Highlight Trkiye’s Strategic Role Ahead of NATO’s 2026 Ankara Summit

Istanbul: Experts and former diplomats engaged in discussions on the future of NATO, the European security framework, and Trkiye's strategic autonomy at a panel event in Istanbul. The event was organized as a precursor to the NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8, 2026, in Ankara.

According to Anadolu Agency, the panel, titled "NATO 2026: A View from Istanbul on the Road to the Ankara Summit," was a collaborative effort by the Turkish Atlantic Council and the Youth Section of the Atlantic Treaty Association (YATA) Trkiye. Turkish Atlantic Council President Mehmet Fatih Ceylan and YATA Trkiye President Tuna Tanman delivered the opening remarks.

Ceylan emphasized the strategic importance of the upcoming Ankara summit in addressing the growing divide between the United States and its European allies. He recalled the 2004 NATO summit hosted in Istanbul and questioned whether Ankara could act as a bridge between the Atlantic partners. He noted that the success of the summit would hinge on its ability to address the ongoing rift between Washington and European allies, highlighting that NATO currently faces a significant internal crisis.

The crisis, Ceylan argued, is not solely attributable to the US presidency. He traced its roots to earlier events, such as the US withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the 2003 Iraq War. These events, along with others like the Afghanistan withdrawal and AUKUS, have influenced the current state of the alliance. He also touched upon the impact of Russia's war against Ukraine on European security, urging that Europe's defense initiatives should not exclude non-EU NATO allies like Trkiye, the UK, and Norway.

Tanman expanded the discussion, stating that modern security threats go beyond traditional military concerns, citing cyberattacks, energy security, and climate change as part of the broader security agenda. He stressed that NATO is navigating one of its most complex strategic periods and that Trkiye's role is crucial due to its geopolitical position.

The event featured two panels focusing on "The Future of NATO and the European Security Architecture" and "NATO and Trkiye's Strategic Autonomy." Panelists highlighted Europe's limited defense capabilities without the US and the ongoing burden-sharing debate within NATO. They pointed to Russia's actions since 2014 as revitalizing NATO's military focus, while also addressing the challenges posed by China's rise.

Trkiye's strategic position in the Black Sea and its diplomatic maneuvers in the Russia-Ukraine conflict were emphasized as critical to regional security. The Ankara summit is seen as an opportunity to showcase Trkiye's defense industry capabilities and its role as a mediator in international crises. The summit's outcome will be pivotal in determining the future direction of US-European relations within NATO.
