Gulf Cooperation Council Celebrates 44 Years of Integration and Progress

Abu Dhabi: Today marks the 44th anniversary of the founding of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), highlighting a significant history of joint action and integration among the Gulf states.

According to Union of OIC News Agencies, this anniversary reflects the success of the Council’s strategies and the strength of its structure, guided by the wise policies of the leaders of the six GCC states.

The GCC was officially established 44 years ago with the first Gulf summit in Abu Dhabi, aiming for coordination, integration, and unity among member states. The Council’s creation was driven by the Gulf leaders’ awareness of their countries’ shared characteristics and the desire for cooperation in various fields.

The GCC was envisioned not as a temporary political or economic bloc, but as a transformative project to realize the aspirations of Gulf generations, strengthen Gulf identity, and address contemporary challenges. Over its history, the GCC has become a model of regional integration, contributing to security
and stability, and is recognized globally for its achievements.

In March, the GCC Ministerial Council reiterated its commitment to moving from a cooperation phase to a union phase, as proposed by the late King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. The Council emphasized the importance of unity and coordination among member states to meet the aspirations of GCC citizens.

The GCC’s establishment in 1981 was in response to regional tensions and challenges. The Council was formed to enhance economic, political, and security integration among its member states. Its charter outlines objectives such as strengthening ties, establishing common systems, advancing scientific progress, and encouraging private sector cooperation.

The GCC has made significant strides, including the establishment of the Gulf Common Market and the Free Trade Zone. Intra-GCC trade has grown, and the region’s foreign trade volume reached USD 1.5 trillion in 2023. The GCC has also completed projects like the unified identity card and electricity interco
nnection, enhancing cooperation and infrastructure.

The GCC’s comprehensive security strategy, joint military initiatives, and media and petroleum strategies reflect its multifaceted approach to regional integration. On the international stage, the GCC has developed unified positions on political issues and expanded partnerships and trade agreements globally.

The GCC plays a critical role in global energy markets, controlling a significant portion of the world’s oil reserves and maintaining a strong presence in crude oil and natural gas production. The region’s sovereign wealth funds hold substantial assets, influencing global markets and investments.

As the GCC looks to the future, it continues to focus on comprehensive development, driven by its citizens and aiming for sustainable growth. The GCC’s achievements and ongoing projects underscore its position as a leading regional and global model for economic and political cooperation.
