Abu dhabi: H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), has honoured the winners of the second cycle of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Environmental Award during a ceremony at Al Nakheel Palace in Abu Dhabi.
According to Emirates News Agency, the ceremony witnessed the presence of dignitaries including Sheikh Hazza bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Yas bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and others. The event began with Sheikh Hamdan touring an interactive presentation of the award's first cycle achievements, followed by signing a pledge to protect the environment.
The ceremony highlighted the award's objectives and its impact in promoting environmental sustainability. Sheikh Hamdan honoured 33 winners for their contributions in various environmental fields, emphasizing the UAE's commitment to environmental sustainability as a national responsibility. He praised the award for inspiring sectors to adopt responsible environmental approaches and recognized its role in nurturing creativity and shared responsibility.
Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of EAD, spoke about the award's national expansion and its role in translating environmental concerns into sustainable solutions. The second cycle saw a significant increase in participation, with near 700 entries. The Emirates Environmental Excellence Model was introduced, raising ambition standards and broadening the award's scope.
Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, highlighted the award's alignment with global best practices and its role in advancing sustainable development. She emphasized its potential to address global challenges.
The ceremony also recognized Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber with the Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Environmental Medal of Honour for his leadership in harmonizing economic development with environmental stewardship. Other recipients included Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi and Dr Katarzyna Sterriker for their contributions in respective categories.
The award reflects the UAE's dedication to fostering environmental excellence and innovation, paving the way for future initiatives that contribute to sustainable development.
