Paris: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has officially launched the Second Edition of the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025. This marks a significant advancement in the Union’s efforts to promote Nature-based Solutions that are effective and firmly grounded in science.
According to Emirates News Agency, the updated standard was released during a high-level forum organized by the IUCN Secretariat, the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM), and France’s Agence fran§aise de d©veloppement. The publication is produced by the IUCN Nature-based Solutions Management Hub and the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management, highlighting the Union’s leadership in advancing Nature-based Solutions globally.
The new edition includes updates that enhance clarity, usability, and safeguards. It builds on five years of experience and moves beyond a checklist approach, embracing systems thinking. This approach emphasizes the interconnections between ecological, social, and economic dimensions. The standard streamlines language and structure for improved clarity, while reinforcing equity and rights by placing Indigenous Peoples and local communities at the center of decision-making. Safeguards, grievance mechanisms, and adaptive management are strengthened to ensure Nature-based Solutions remain effective over time.
The revision also introduces clearer framing of financial feasibility and long-term viability, with a stronger focus on enabling conditions such as policy, finance, and regulatory frameworks. This focus aims to help scale Nature-based Solutions worldwide with confidence.
