Washington: At the invitation of the United States, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, and the US convened to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan, recognized as the world’s most severe humanitarian crisis with significant implications for regional peace and security.
According to Union of OIC News Agencies, the ministers reached a consensus on principles aimed at resolving the conflict. They emphasized Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity as pivotal for peace and stability. They also committed to monitoring the progress and exerting efforts to ensure full compliance with the agreed timelines, including scheduling further meetings to evaluate next steps.
The ministers underscored that external military support exacerbates and prolongs the conflict, contributing to regional instability. They agreed on the necessity of ending such support to facilitate peace.
In their commitment to a peaceful resolution, the ministers pledged support for a negotiated settlement involving the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. They also vowed to pressure all parties to safeguard civilians and infrastructure while ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
Key focus areas include securing the Red Sea region, addressing cross-border threats from terrorist organizations, and preventing destabilizing influences from exploiting the Sudanese conflict. The ministers expressed readiness to collaborate with African and Arab nations, the United Nations, and international partners to restore peace and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Discussions also covered urgent humanitarian needs and recovery efforts, with a call for the international community to remain engaged in addressing these challenges. The ministers affirmed ongoing discussions at various levels to bolster coordinated efforts towards a comprehensive and transparent transition in Sudan.
The ministers voiced support for the Jeddah Process led by Saudi Arabia and the US, aimed at securing a permanent ceasefire, and acknowledged Egypt’s efforts in facilitating the Sudanese Civil and Political Forces Forum. Future consultations are planned for the Quadripartite Ministerial Meeting in September 2025.
