Masdar Signs Landmark Agreement for 150MW Solar Project in Angola

Abu dhabi: Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC - Masdar has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the 150-megawatt (MW) Quipungo Solar Photovoltaic project in Angola, marking Masdar's first PPA in the country.

According to Emirated news Agency, the Quipungo project is the initial contracted site under Project Royal Sable, a planned 500MW renewable energy programme across three sites aimed at strengthening Angola's southern power grid and supporting the country's sustainable development objectives. The agreement was formalized with the state-owned offtaker Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidade (RNT-EP), signed by Abdulaziz Alobadli of Masdar and Mauro Hernany Ferrerira Martins of RNT-EP.

The signing occurred during the IRENA General Assembly, part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, and was witnessed by several high-profile figures, including Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Joo Baptista Borges, Angola's Minister of Energy and Water. The PPA ensures long-term electricity offtake from the Quipungo site, located in Huila Province, and lays the groundwork for the phased development of the broader 500MW portfolio.

Project Royal Sable is expected to create over 2,000 jobs, deliver clean electricity to approximately 300,000 homes, and enhance power generation capacity in Angola's southern grid. The initiative underscores Masdar's commitment to developing large-scale renewable energy infrastructure in emerging markets, aligning with national energy strategies and expanding access to clean power.

Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), emphasized the significance of the Quipungo PPA, noting its role in strengthening Angola's power system and expanding access to clean electricity. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Masdar's CEO, highlighted Africa's growing energy needs and Masdar's dedication to fostering renewable energy across the continent, marking the agreement as a critical milestone.

Masdar, through its joint venture Infinity Power, is the largest renewables operator in Africa, currently managing 1.3GW of solar and wind projects, and aiming for a 100 GW portfolio capacity by 2030. The addition of Project Royal Sable will further contribute to this ambitious target.
