Berlin: Meta, the US-based technology giant, has received the green light to utilize Facebook and Instagram content from users in Germany and other European Union countries for the purpose of training its artificial intelligence software, Meta AI. This development comes after the deadline for users to opt out of this data usage expired on Tuesday.
According to Emirates News Agency, Meta intends to analyze all public content shared by adult users throughout the EU to enhance its AI models, unless users have specifically opted out. The decision to proceed with this data usage was upheld by a German court on Friday, which dismissed a complaint from the consumer protection agency in North Rhine-Westphalia. The complaint alleged that Meta’s actions were in violation of EU data protection regulations.
The court ruled that Meta’s utilization of the data serves a legitimate purpose and cannot be achieved through less invasive means. Furthermore, the court acknowledged Meta’s commitment to exclude sensitive data such as names, phone numbers, and account details from its analysis. While WhatsApp chats remain protected due to encryption, conversations involving Meta’s AI assistant are deemed public and may be employed for AI training purposes.
