Abu dhabi: Mubadala Investment Company announced its decision to sell its minority stake in CoolIT Systems to Ecolab as part of a $4.75 billion transaction led by KKR.According to Emirates News Agency, Mubadala originally invested in CoolIT in 2023 alongside KKR, which participated through its Global Impact Fund II. CoolIT, a 25-year pioneer in liquid cooling, designs and manufactures systems that support sustainable data centre growth amid rising AI-driven compute demand.Liquid-cooled data centres, which use about 30-40% less energy for cooling than traditional air-cooled centres, also reduce water consumption through a closed-loop system. CoolIT's technologies are employed by hyperscalers and data centre operators to enhance energy efficiency and support AI infrastructure in over 300 data centres globally.Abdulla Mohamed Shadid, Head of Energy and Sustainability, Private Equity at Mubadala, highlighted the strategic value of liquid cooling in sustainable digital infrastructure, noting CoolIT's establ ished position as a leading global player in this technology. He attributed the success to the partnership with KKR and the CoolIT management team.CoolIT has achieved significant operational improvements and growth, expanding its manufacturing footprint to over 300,000 square feet and increasing its coolant distribution unit capacity by 25 times. The workforce has doubled, with more than 300 jobs added, positioning the company for substantial projected revenue and EBITDA growth through 2026.Jason Waxman, CEO of CoolIT Systems, emphasized that the acquisition by Ecolab, an industry leader in water management, is a positive outcome for customers, employees, and shareholders. He affirmed the company's continued commitment to building a strong business in the UAE even after the acquisition closes.By 2030, data centres are expected to consume significant energy and water resources, with projections of 945 TWh of energy and 450 million gallons of water per day. In 2025, CoolIT's solutions contributed to signi ficant energy savings, equivalent to powering approximately 200,000 homes for a year.The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.
