Museums Acknowledged as Key Innovators and Cultural Stewards on International Museum Day

Paris: The International Council of Museums (ICOM) is set to observe International Museum Day (IMD) tomorrow, emphasizing the crucial role museums play as connectors, innovators, and stewards of cultural identity. This annual event, held on 18 May, serves as a unique opportunity for the global museum community to engage in cultural exchange and foster mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace.

According to Emirates News Agency, ICOM has highlighted that more than 37,000 museums from approximately 158 countries and territories participated in last year's IMD, showcasing the growing recognition of museums worldwide. The theme for this year's celebration, "The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities," calls for a reimagining of museums' roles amidst the evolving global landscape. This theme, aligning with the 27th ICOM General Conference in Dubai, emphasizes the importance of safeguarding intangible heritage, engaging the youth, and embracing technological advancements.

Museums are increasingly seen as active contributors to sustainable and inclusive community development. This year's theme aligns with three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 8 focuses on supporting local economies through job creation and educational programs. SDG 9 highlights the role of museums in driving innovation and accessibility through creativity and technology. SDG 11 underscores museums' contributions to sustainable urban development by acting as cultural hubs that promote inclusion, resilience, and heritage preservation.
