Nearly 8,000 Migrants Dead or Missing in 2025, Reports Reveal

Geneva: The International Organisation for Migration has announced that nearly 8,000 migrants worldwide died or went missing during 2025, bringing the total number of such cases since 2014 to more than 82,000. This alarming figure highlights the continued peril faced by migrants across the globe as they embark on dangerous journeys in search of better opportunities.

According to Emirates News Agency, the organisation reported that at least 340,000 family members were directly affected by these tragic incidents. The findings were based on data from its Displacement Tracking Matrix, along with insights from its latest migration routes report and analysis from the Missing Migrants Project.

The data indicates that, despite a decline in the number of arrivals in some regions, migration routes have not become safer. Instead, these routes have shifted, with risks remaining high along journeys that have become increasingly dangerous. The new migration routes report for 2025 explains that the reduction in arrivals in certain areas does not suggest reduced migration pressure. Rather, it reflects a shift in routes due to enforcement measures, conflict dynamics, and environmental pressures affecting existing pathways.
