New York:New York City The New York City Council has voted to prohibit horse-drawn carriages from operating on city streets and in Central Park starting in June 2028. This decision marks the end of a historic tourist attraction and a long-standing industry within the city.
According to Wam, the ban was supported by 40 out of the city's 51 lawmakers, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani backing the bill. Seven council members opposed the measure, and two abstained from voting.
The push for the ban gained momentum following a tragic incident in June, where an 18-year-old Indian tourist died after being thrown from a carriage. The horse bolted while the driver had stepped away to take a photograph of the tourist, leading to increased calls for the cessation of the industry.
