Krakow: Poland’s southern city of Krakow has embarked on an innovative pilot program aimed at controlling its burgeoning pigeon population by distributing contraceptive-treated corn in bustling public areas. City officials have announced the initiative, which involves the installation of special ‘smart feeders’ at prime pigeon gathering spots, including the city’s Main Market Square. These feeders dispense a daily ration of corn infused with a veterinary-approved contraceptive, designed to prevent pigeon reproduction without adversely affecting the birds’ health or behavior.
According to Anadolu Agency, city authorities have introduced this method to tackle issues associated with pigeon overpopulation, such as the risk of disease transmission, food shortages, and damage to Krakow’s historic architecture, all while maintaining a humane and ethical approach. Officials have emphasized that the solution is safe for humans and other animals, with the dual aim of improving the birds’ condition and mitigating the problems caused by overpopulation.
Authorities anticipate that the initiative will enhance cleanliness, boost pedestrian safety, and minimize disruptions caused by large flocks of pigeons. The project offers two delivery methods: pigeons can consume the contraceptive-laden grain directly from the feeders, or the contraceptive can be administered intranasally, a minimally invasive technique to ensure the drug’s efficacy.
This project represents a collaborative effort by Krakow City Hall, the Dzikusy Salamandry Foundation, scientists, and animal welfare specialists. Officials noted that similar programs in other European cities, such as Brussels, have successfully reduced pigeon populations without resorting to trapping or culling.
