Seoul to Hold High-Level Meetings as August Tariff Deadline Approaches

Seoul: The presidential office in Seoul announced plans to intensify trade negotiations with Washington by organizing a series of high-level meetings scheduled for next week. These efforts aim to address the imminent imposition of tariffs.

According to Emirates News Agency, the declaration came after an emergency meeting was held earlier in the day. The meeting was led by Kim Yong-beom, the presidential chief of staff for policy, and National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac. It focused on reviewing the progress of ongoing discussions and strategizing Seoul's response as the deadline for the new U.S. tariffs on August 1 draws closer.

To further the negotiations, key meetings are planned with U.S. officials. Koo is set to meet with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, while Cho will engage with Secretary of State Marco Rubio next week. The primary objective of these discussions is to alleviate the threatened 25 percent "reciprocal" tariffs from the U.S., along with potential duties on steel and automobiles, which are slated for implementation on August 1.
