Sharjah: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and Supreme President of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, honoured the winners of the eighth edition of the Sharjah Linguistic Lexical Studies Award during a ceremony held at Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre.
According to Emirates News Agency, Dr. Marwa Mustafa Al Sayed secured first place in the Linguistics category: Textual Linguistic Studies, with her research titled 'Collocations in Contemporary Journalistic Language: An Applied Study of a Number of Arab Newspapers (2009-2010).' Dr. Issa Ouda Barhouma earned second place in the same category for 'The Nakedness of the Text: Linguistic Studies in Poetry and Narrative.'
In the Lexicography category: Dictionaries Compiled on the Terminology of Arabic Linguistic Sciences, Dr. Mahmoud Suleiman Yaqout won first place for his study 'A Dictionary of Linguistic Science Terminology in Arab Heritage,' while Dr. Zaher Mohammed Obaid came second for 'The Detailed Dictionary of Poetic Necessities.'
Dr. Samir Al Daroubi, a member of the jury, expressed gratitude to the Ruler of Sharjah for his patronage, describing the award as prestigious in Arabic and international circles. He highlighted the jury's efforts to objectively assess the submitted research, noting the quality of entries and the support from the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah.
Dr. Al Daroubi emphasized the award's distinguished status, attributing its success to Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi's vision and support. Dr. Mahmoud Suleiman Yaqout also expressed appreciation to the Ruler and those involved with the award, acknowledging the scholars who evaluated the works and determined the winners.
Yaqout noted the award's anticipation among linguistic researchers, fostering scholarly engagement through substantial research and dictionary submissions, enriching academic study in the language of the Qur'an.
During the ceremony, themes for the ninth edition of the award in 2026 were announced. The Linguistic Studies category will explore 'Linguistic and Rhetorical Studies in Qur'anic Discourse,' while the Lexicographical Studies category will focus on 'Modern Lexicographical Studies.'
At the ceremony's conclusion, the Ruler of Sharjah received publications and gifts from the winners, posed for photographs, and wished them continued success in advancing the Arabic language.
