Sharjah Ruler Inaugurates 23rd Edition of Sharjah Heritage Days

Sharjah: H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, witnessed the launch of the 23rd edition of Sharjah Heritage Days, organised by the Sharjah Institute for Heritage under the theme 'Glow of Authenticity'. The event, which will continue until 15 February, is being held in the Heritage Area at the Heart of Sharjah.

According to Emirates News Agency, upon the arrival of H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan, the motorcade was greeted by performances from multiple folk groups, who celebrated his presence with traditional heritage chants. These welcoming displays embodied the authenticity of popular heritage and the bond with the leadership.

H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan observed traditional musical performances by various folk groups such as Al Ayala, Al Harbiya, Al Razha, and Al Nadba. The programme also included heritage displays, a Bedouin camel caravan, and a falconry showcase, reflecting the richness of Emirati folk heritage and its connection to national identity.

H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan was briefed on the event's activities, which feature participation from 27 countries and over 265 artisans presenting 40 traditional crafts and 20 forms of folk chants. The event includes 41 Arab and international folk groups performing 1,173 artistic displays, along with 307 workshops, 57 educational programmes, 44 live shows, five training courses, 19 awareness programmes, and 70 heritage competitions. Additionally, 21 new activities are being introduced for the first time.

During the event, H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan visited the pavilion of the Republic of Portugal, the Guest of Honour for this edition, with the theme 'Dialogues between Memory and the Future'. He explored decorations and artworks showcasing Portuguese arts from the 16th century to the present, and learned about handmade works presented by the pavilion's artists.

H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan also attended a Portuguese folk arts performance, which highlighted Portuguese cultural identity through music and performance. This was within a framework reflecting the cultural openness and dialogue celebrated by Sharjah Heritage Days. Additionally, he visited the 'Flavours of Portuguese Heritage' corner to learn about traditional Portuguese dishes and their cultural significance.

In a ceremonial gesture, H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah signed the first commemorative postage stamp issued by Emirates Post to mark the launch of Sharjah Heritage Days. The stamp commemorates the event and highlights the cultural values it represents, while reflecting the UAE's folk heritage and Sharjah's role in preserving it.

This edition of Sharjah Heritage Days is taking place across seven cities and areas in the Emirate of Sharjah: Sharjah City, Khorfakkan, Kalba, Dibba Al Hisn, Al Dhaid, Wadi Al Helo, and Al Hamriyah, showcasing the event's wide geographical reach and community presence.

The opening ceremony was attended by Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Ruler's Office; His Excellency Alberto Fernando Santos, Secretary of State for Culture of Portugal; and several senior officials, diplomats, media representatives, and heritage specialists.
