Sharjah: Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler’s Office, inaugurated the “Andalusian Cultural Landscapes” exhibition at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation. This exhibition, a joint initiative between the Sharjah Museums Authority and the Islamic Culture Foundation (FUNCI) from Spain, will run from October 15, 2025, to April 12, 2026.
According to Emirates News Agency, the exhibition highlights the beauty and historical significance of Andalusian gardens and is divided into two main themes. The first theme, “Gardens of Bliss,” explores the multifaceted roles of gardens in Andalusian society, focusing on their productivity, educational value, spiritual significance, and artistic inspiration. The second theme, “The Good Country,” examines the historical interaction between the people of Andalusia and their land, including topics such as irrigation, agriculture, traditional crafts, and local markets.
The exhibition showcases over 60 artistic and historical artifacts, some of which are being displayed in Sharjah for the first time. These pieces exemplify the agricultural and cultural heritage of Andalusia, merging the aesthetics of nature with human experience. Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman was briefed on how the exhibition serves as a cultural and intellectual gateway, enriching visitors with insights into Andalusia’s impact on civilisation.
The exhibition takes attendees on a historical journey to the eighth century AD, highlighting the influence of Islamic civilisation on the Iberian Peninsula. This period was marked by a fusion of Eastern and local traditions, leading to advancements in various fields such as farming, irrigation, crafts, and architecture. Andalusia is celebrated as a unique example of a civilisation that successfully integrated natural beauty with cultural vibrancy.
Emilio Pin Godos, the Ambassador of Spain to the UAE, expressed gratitude to Sharjah for its commitment to cultural preservation and knowledge sharing. He lauded the enduring partnership between Sharjah and Spain in cultural endeavors and expressed hope for the continued success of such collaborations. Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman was presented with publications from FUNCI in recognition of his support and the exhibition’s inaugural presence in Sharjah, marking the first collaboration between the Sharjah Museums Authority and FUNCI.
The exhibition offers a pioneering perspective on Andalusia’s rich culture, blending historical narratives with contemporary research to provide insights into both urban and rural life in the past. It underscores the timeless lessons from Andalusian history, which continue to inspire and guide future generations. The exhibition also highlights Andalusia as a cultural link between the Islamic East and Mediterranean and European cultures, playing a significant role in shaping Western science and culture.
A variety of cultural and scientific activities will accompany the exhibition, including a discussion session titled “A Journey Through the Heritage of Andalusia: Knowledge and Cultural Exchange.” This session will feature experts from Spain and the UAE discussing Andalusia’s rich history and the influence of Islamic culture on the Iberian Peninsula. Participants will also have the opportunity to join a guided tour of the exhibition, exploring the environmental and cultural aspects of Andalusian civilisation and its enduring legacy.
