Swiss Nuclear Reactors Taken Offline Due to Overheated Aare River

Abu dhabi: The two Beznau nuclear reactors in Switzerland have been removed from the grid as the river Aare, which provides cooling for the reactors, has reached temperatures too high for effective cooling.

According to Emirates News Agency, the energy company Axpo announced on Friday that both reactors are now in a shutdown state due to the river water overheating. The temperature of the river Aare reached 25 degrees Celsius, exceeding the threshold required for safe reactor cooling.

The operation of the reactors had already been adjusted earlier in the week, with output reduced to 50% by Tuesday. Axpo reported that the river reached 25 degrees for the first time on Wednesday, following a full mixing of the cooling water.

Axpo warned that if the river's temperature did not decrease, a complete shutdown of the reactors would be necessary by Friday. The nuclear units located on the Aare island in D¶ttingen had previously ceased electricity production temporarily in July 2025.
