Tourism Night Revenues Increase from Pre-pandemic Level for Second Straight Month in June in Bulgaria

Revenues from nights spent by tourists at accommodation establishments in Bulgaria in June 2023 were above the pre-pandemic level in the same month in 2019, just as it was in May 2023 compared with May 2019, Bulgarian News Agency reported.

In June 2023, revenues stood at BGN 229.2 million, increasing by 28.2% compared to June 2022. The increase resulted from a 41.1% growth in revenues from nights spent by foreign tourists and a 5.2% growth generated by Bulgarians.

Bed occupancy at accommodation establishments in Bulgaria in June 2023 was 36.8%, up by 4.4 percentage points compared to June 2022. Occupancy was highest at four and five-star hotels, at 48.8%, followed by three-star establishments, at 29.9%, and one and two-star establishments, at 20.4%.

The number of tourists who spent nights at accommodation establishments in Bulgaria in June 2023 increased by 16.4% (foreigners 33.5%, Bulgarians 2.5%) compared to June 2022, reaching 975,500 people. The total number included 474,000 Bulgarians, who spent an average of 2.4 nights each, and 501,500 foreigners, spending an average of 4.4 nights each. Some 75.6% of foreign tourists stayed at four and five-star hotels.

In June 2023, Bulgaria had 3,232 operational accommodation establishments with ten or more beds. Establishments increased by 4.6% against June 2022, and beds by 5.1%.
