Typhoon Khanun kills two people and cuts off electricity in southern Japan

Two people were killed and about 166,000 families were without electricity in the Japanese regions of Okinawa and Kagoshima this morning, as the rains and stormy winds associated with the slowly moving Typhoon Khanun continued.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the storm in the East China Sea is moving to the northwest at a slow speed of about 222 kilometers per hour.

The Japanese Public Information Authority (NHK) said that the typhoon is expected to change direction and move east towards the mainland until next Tuesday, but its path has not been determined.

The public information authority reported that two people died in Okinawa, a popular tourist destination located about 1,600 kilometers southwest of the capital, Tokyo.

The Okinawa Electric Power Company said on its website that 160,040 families, and about a quarter of the number of homes supplied by the company, are experiencing power outages.

Typhoon Khanun also forced schools and businesses to close in northern Taiwan today and cancel about 40 percent of international flights.
