Geneva: The UAE, represented by a delegation from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), took part in the initial preparatory meeting for the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) 2024-2025. This meeting, recently held in Geneva, was conducted under the Chairship of Colombia and in collaboration with France. Ambassador Jamal Al Musharakh, UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to supporting the Forum’s initiatives, highlighting the significance of shared responsibility in tackling migration issues.
According to Emirates News Agency, the preparatory meeting addressed various challenges and opportunities tied to regular migration and temporary labour mobility, which are seen as essential components of development and community wellbeing. The discussions also covered important topics for the 2024-2025 period, such as the impact of women on global migration and development and the role of
media and culture in reshaping the global perspective on migration towards its developmental contributions.
Participants explored possibilities for enhancing regional cooperation to ensure safe and orderly migration aimed at development. The emphasis was placed on improving migration management, pathways, and other related areas. The Geneva meeting was the first of three preparatory meetings planned as part of the GFMD 2024-2025 agenda, setting the stage for ongoing discussions on shared migration challenges, innovative solutions, and sustainable policies that support international development.
The UAE, through MoHRE, has been actively engaged in the Forum’s activities since 2008 and assumed the Chairship in 2020. This involvement is driven by a strong vision for enhancing cooperation between governments on labour mobility. The engagement aligns with the Abu Dhabi Dialogue, a key regional platform for communication between labour-sending and receiving countries in the Asia corridor. It focuses on best pract
ices to support bilateral and regional cooperation and partnerships aimed at regulating labour markets in the region.
The UAE’s participation promotes the exchange of innovative initiatives to improve workers’ wellbeing within a thriving business community, while maximizing benefits from labour mobility for the economies of member states in the corridor.
