UAE to Lead Global Committee on AI in Search and Rescue Systems

Abu Dhabi: The UAE will chair the International Committee on Artificial Intelligence in Search and Rescue Systems. This follows the announcement by the International Cospas-Sarsat Organization during its virtual meeting held on June 13th of the formation of an international working group specializing in artificial intelligence applications in search and rescue satellite systems. This follows the success of the organization's meetings held in Abu Dhabi from May 27th to June 5th, 2025.

According to Union of OIC News Agencies, this decision comes based on the working paper presented by the National Guard Command, represented by the National Search and Rescue Center, during the meetings of the International Committee, which were attended by representatives from 45 countries, along with several international organizations, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The UAE has proposed a technical proposal aimed at integrating artificial intelligence technologies into Mission Control Center (MCC) operations, enhancing the efficiency of space rescue systems and improving the speed and accuracy of responding to distress calls through intelligent data processing and integration across satellite networks.

This decision reflects the UAE's international standing and consolidates its role as a strategic partner in the future of the COSPAS-SARSAT system and the development of its technical infrastructure.

The new committee is set to establish global standards and rules for integrating artificial intelligence into space search and rescue systems, enhance technical cooperation and exchange of expertise and knowledge among member states, and open membership to entities wishing to join this international initiative.
